FIVE TAKHATS of KHALSA

Takhat (in layman’s language) refers to a four-legged wooden seat meant for Imperial Throne or Royal Seat of a monarch. But these Takhat get eroded by time.
In GURMAT, the TAKHAT has a UNIQUE Conception which is

  • ETERNAL(Sarv-vyapak)
  • IMPARTIAL
  • INDEPENDENT
  •   SOVEREIGN on the ways of the GURU Panth only.

Thus TAKHATS in Sikhism are an outcome of Sanjhivalta from the Sikh Gurus. The Five Takhts are the five Gurudwaras. They are considered the seats of Sikh religious authority. The important decisions concerning the religious and social life of the Sikh community are taken here.

There are FIVE TAKHATS, being two located out of Punjab & other three in Punjab.
Ø  SRI AKAL TAKHAT SAHIB, Amritsar
Ø  TAKHT SRI DAMDAMA SAHIB, Talwandi Sabo (Bathinda)
Ø  TAKHT SRI KESGARH SAHIB, Anandpur Sahib
Ø  TAKHT SRI HAZOOR SAHIB, Nanded(Maharashtra)
Ø  TAKHT SRI PTANA SAHIB, Patna(Bihar)

SRI AKAL TAKHAT SAHIB: Throne of the ALMIGHTY

"Akal Takht" is a combination of two words: Akal (the Almighty) and Takht (Throne) meaning thereby the "Throne of the Almighty".  Sahib is used as a mark of respect for Guru Sahib and the Sikh institutions. Akal Takht Sahib represents the Sikh institution of Miri *–Piri *(Oneness of Shakti & Bhagti).
The Akal Takht is situated opposite to Harmandir Sahib and is connected by a passage.
The building of the Akal Takht opposite the Golden Temple has a special meaning. While the Darbar Sahib stands for spiritual Guidance ; the Akal Takht symbolizes the Dispensing of Justice and Temporal activity.
During the day the Guru Granth Sahib is kept in the Golden Temple, while at night it is kept in the Akal Takht Sahib.
Sixth Nanak, Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji laid down the foundation stone of the building of Akal Takhat Sahib (in 1609). The rest of the structure was completed by Sikh saint Baba Buddha and Sikh intellectual Bhai Gurdas.
It is here that Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji used to hold his Court and receive ambassadors, emissaries (agents), diplomats and other dignitaries. In the evenings this was a place for signing of heroic ballads by the "dhadis"(ballad singers).
The Akal Takht is the oldest of the Five Takhts. Akal Takht Sahib is the senior-most seat of Sikh authority. The Hukamnamas issued from Akal Takht Sahib are obligatory for each and every Sikh. A Sikh daring to defy the Hukamnama of Akal Takht Sahib ceases to be a member of the Sikh Panth.

                                           TAKHAT SRI DAMDAMA SAHIB

Takht Sri Damdama Sahib is situated in the village of Talwandi Sabo near Bhatinda.
At this place Sahib Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji stayed here for approximately a year and compiled the final edition of Sri Guru Granth Sahib JI also known as the Damdama Sahib Bir in 1705.

                            TAKHAT SRI KESGARH SAHIB

Takht Sri Keshgarh Sahib is situated at Anandpur Sahib; the birthplace of the Khalsa. The order of the Khalsa was founded here by SRI GURU GOBIND SINGH JI in 1699. Some of the weapons of SRI GURU GOBIND SINGH JI are displayed here. The most precious of these is the actual Khanda (double edged sword) used by SRI GURU GOBIND SINGH JI to prepare AMRIT used in the first Khalsa initiation ceremony.

                                             TAKHAT SRI HAZOOR SAHIB

Takht Sri Hazoor Sahib is situated on the banks of Godavari River in Maharashtra state. This is the place where Guru Gobind Singh left for Heavenly abode. The inner room of the Gurdawara Sahib is called Angitha Sahib and is built over the place where SRI GURU GOBIND SINGH SAHIB JI was cremated in 1708.

                                       TAKHAT SRI PATNA SAHIB

Takht Sri Patna Sahib is situated in Patna city which is also the capital of Bihar state. SRI GURU GOBIND SINGH SAHIB JI was born here in 1666 and he spent his early childhood here before moving to Anandpur Sahib. Besides being the birthplace of SRI GURU GOBIND SINGH SAHIB JI, Patna was also visited by Guru Nanak Sahib Ji and Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji at different points of time.

*** At Takht Sri Hazoor Sahib Ji & Takht Sri Patna Sahib Ji; the anti-Sikh forces have succeeded to a great extent in bringing in practices completely against Sikh worldview. But we must not get indulge in these as we are to follow the HUKAM of our GURUS; the HOLY GURU GRANTH SAHIB JI.
